Prayagraj: With the constant rise in the water level of the twin rivers – Ganga and Yamuna, district authorities have sounded an alert asking people living in low lying areas to shift to relief camps.District authorities after acknolwedging that both rivers are flowing four to five meters below the danger mark, have taken an extensive exercise to identify relief camps across the district.Plans are afoot to set up around 103 relief camps including 12 in city and rest across the district in case of floods.On Tuesday, the water level of Ganga at Phaphamau and Chhatnaag recorded 80.03 and 78.88 meters respectively while the level of river Yamuna at Naini stands 79.17 meters.Officials said that water level of Ganga and Yamuna is rising in city and both the rivers are yet flowing five meters below the danger mark. The danger mark is 84.73 meters for twin rivers.The water level of Ganga and Yamuna, as recorded 12 noon by the irrigation department, on Tuesday showed a rising trend at Phaphamau, Chhatnaag and Naini. The level of both rivers rose up eight to 14 cms in the past four hours.District Magistrate (Prayagraj) Manish Kumar Verma told TOI, “District authorities have already sounded an alert and Munadi (public annoucement) was being carried out in the areas located near river banks. Authorities have completed all preparations in view of rising water level of twin rivers and flood relief camp in city have been activated.”Officials of the flood control department, however, said, “ When water level of river Ganga will cross 82.10 meter mark, then flood water might be entering in low lying areas like Baghara, Chota Baghara and adjoining areas.”In current scenario, the flood water released from different dams like Narora and Kanpur barrage is passing through river Ganga freelow after finding adequate space. Meanwhile, residents living in low lying areas have even started looking for alternative arrangements in safer areas if the flood like situation arises in city. Baghara resident AK Tripathi said, “River Ganga is very far from our housebut if the water level rises constantly in coming three to five days and crosses 82 meter mark, we would have to think to shift to safer places.”The boating in Sangam and other ghats has already been suspended.
