‘Proactive campaign launched to ensure no eligible voter left out of electoral roll’

Dehradun: Chief electoral officer (CEO) in Uttarakhand Dr BVRC Purushottam said on Monday that in accordance with the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) directive, “all the 13 district electoral officers (DEOs) in the state have launched a proactive campaign to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral roll”.Special camps are being held at the state’s polling booths from Oct 8 to 10 for this purpose. In these camps, the names of voters who were removed will be cross-verified by comparing the pre-SIR electoral roll with the current one. “Individuals with grievances can approach any of the 12,543 booth level officers (BLOs), 800 assistant electoral registration officers (AEROs), 70 electoral registration officers (EROs), or 13 DEOs,” he said. This comes amid the nationwide debate surrounding the SIR; and the ECI has directed states that have completed the process to launch a “special campaign” for voter enrolment.According to final electoral roll released by CEO’s office on Oct 3, following the completion of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process in Uttarakhand, the state has a total of 71,58,949 voters. The electoral roll issued on Jan 6, 2025 had listed 84,29,459 voters; later on, 17,05,130 names were deleted and 4,01,276 added.During door-to-door campaigns BLOs will visit households to identify voters whose names were deleted and update their details. They will facilitate the on-the-spot filling of Form-6 for voter enrolment. The BLOs will share this information with the booth-level agents of political parties.Notably, the electoral roll released on Jan 6, 2025 listed 84,29,459 voters in Uttarakhand; this figure served as the basis for conducting the pre-SIR and SIR processes in the state. When the electoral roll was “frozen” for the SIR process, the state had 79,27,418 voters; the SIR process was subsequently initiated based on this figure.During the SIR, the names of 8,26,977 voters falling under ‘ASDD’ (absent, shifted, dead or duplicate) category and 1,04,708 voters in ‘ineligible’ category were deleted. Additionally, 1,29,872 voters were added during this period, resulting in a final voter count of 71,58,949 in Uttarakhand.
