Patiala: Twelve family members of deceased Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) employees climbed atop the corporation’s head office here on Monday, demanding jobs on compassionate grounds and financial assistance in cases pending for 15 to nearly 30 years. The protesters, including nine men, two women and a 12-year-old girl, intensified their agitation under the banner of the Mritak Ashrit Sangharsh Committee.Union member Harvinderpal Singh said the girl had accompanied her father as her mother had died a few years ago and nobody was available to look after her at home.Committee president Charanjit Singh said the families of employees who died while serving with the erstwhile Punjab State Electricity Board were entitled to govt jobs or ex-gratia assistance under a compassionate relief policy. However, only a few applicants had been recruited, while scores of cases remained pending, he alleged.Charanjit Singh accused the Aam Aadmi Party govt of reneging on assurances made before the 2022 assembly elections, when the union supported the party after it promised to address their grievances on priority.“Despite repeated representations, administrative meetings and assurances from senior bureaucrats, we have received nothing beyond empty words,” he said. The protesters said they would remain on the rooftop until PSPCL management issued written appointment orders or offered a concrete solution. They held the state govt and PSPCL authorities responsible for any harm to the demonstrators.Senior police and PSPCL officials cordoned off the area and began talks with the protest leaders to resolve the standoff.
