‘Never uttered a word’: Sujit’s lawyer files plaint for probe into judge’s chamber incident

Kolkata: The advocate-on-record in former minister Sujit Bose’s plea case filed a petition in the court of Calcutta High Court Acting Chief Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty on Friday, urging an enquiry and preservation of CCTV footage of the front room of Justice Suvra Ghosh’s chambers. This comes two days after Justice Ghosh recused herself from hearing Bose’s bail plea, alleging that the lawyer and the judge’s personal secretary had tried to access case records from her chamber. In her affidavit, junior advocate Mousumi Bhowal claimed that on Aug 18 around 2.25pm, she was told by Nahid Ahmed – one of the juniors of senior advocate Sabyasachi Banerjee – that Justice Ghosh’s personal secretary Shikha Mukherjee had wanted to see her at court room no. 15.According to Bhowal, she met Mukherjee at 2.30 pm, and was taken to the chamber’s front room where the latter asked a staffer to show the records of the case. “I have not uttered any word,” Bhowal claimed, and added that when the staffer said that the file was with Justice Ghosh and could not be shown, the lawyer left the place “without saying anything”.Mukherjee, according to Bhowal, had requested her to hand over judgment copies her senior had referred to during the hearing. “I have never connived with the learned court officer (Mukherjee) to bring out the record of the case. I have never tried to enter the chamber of her ladyship the hon’ble Justice Suvra Ghosh on Aug 18 between 2.40pm to 2.42pm,” Bhowal stressed.
