NEW DELHI: BJP president Nitin Nabin on Saturday questioned Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s silence over sexual harassment allegations against Congress MP and professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam.Accusing the Lok Sabha leader of the opposition of resorting to “loud slogans and selective action”, Nabin asked whether Rahul Gandhi would remove Akoijam from the Congress or reserve his moral outrage for “political convenience”.In a post on X, Nabin said, “The mask is off the self-proclaimed champions of women’s rights and the ‘Smash the Patriarchy’ brigade.”His remarks came a day after Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) dismissed Akoijam with immediate effect following an inquiry that found him guilty of the allegations. Akoijam was a professor at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems under JNU’s School of Social Sciences.

“Loud slogans, selective action. Will Rahul Gandhi demand accountability from his own MP and sack him, or is his moral outrage reserved only for political convenience?” the BJP chief added.According to reports, at least 11 female students filed sexual harassment complaints against Akoijam in May. The complainants alleged that he invited students to his campus residence under the pretext of meetings or gatherings and attempted to sexually harass them. Some students also accused him of making “obscene and inappropriate” remarks in class.Reacting to JNU’s decision, Akoijam alleged that he was being subjected to a “witch-hunt”.“I have not received the internal committee recommendations and even the official dismissal order yet. I have nothing to hide. This is nothing but a witch hunt,” he told reporters following his dismissal.(With PTI inputs)
