Chandigarh: The Cyber Crime Police Station, Sector 17, has arrested a 32-year-old man from West Bengal for allegedly duping a city resident of Rs 23.2 lakh through an online investment fraud last year.The accused, Mohammad Umar, was arrested in connection with an FIR registered on July 21, 2025, under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Police said the case was registered on the complaint of a woman who alleged that she was lured into investing money after coming across an advertisement on Facebook. The accused allegedly asked her to join a WhatsApp group, where the administrator persuaded her to invest funds with the promise of returns.Acting on the instructions of the alleged fraudsters, the complainant transferred a total of Rs 23.2 lakh to various bank accounts provided by them.During investigation, the cyber police found that Rs 17.3 lakh from the defrauded amount had been credited to a bank account linked to Umar.Police said Umar belongs to Gaya in Bihar and had been residing in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Based on technical inputs and field investigation, a Chandigarh cyber police team conducted a raid in West Bengal and apprehended him.During questioning, Umar allegedly revealed the involvement of two other persons in the fraud. Police said efforts are underway to identify and arrest the remaining accused.The accused was produced before a court, which remanded him to 14 days of judicial custody. Further investigation is in progress.
