Fresh ASF cases in Charaideo, ban on pig transport, pork sale

Dibrugarh: Fresh cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been detected among pigs at Hatibondha Pather under Mahmora revenue circle in Charaideo district, prompting district magistrate Neha Yadav to issue prohibitory orders with immediate effect under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).The order, issued on Friday, followed a report from the district animal husbandry and veterinary officer confirming that laboratory tests found ASF infection in pigs in the area. The latest detection comes weeks after Charaideo reported its first ASF case on June 13. Officials said the district administration imposed restrictions to prevent the disease from spreading to adjoining areas.“Considering the exigency of the matter, it becomes necessary to take steps to prevent further spread of infection of African swine fever as a precautionary measure,” the order said.Under the order, transportation of live pigs and pork products has been banned within Mahmora revenue circle. Sale of pork and pork products, slaughter of pigs, and buying or selling of pigs have also been prohibited in the area.Pig owners have been asked to report any pig deaths immediately to the veterinary department. Carcasses must be buried deep in accordance with biosecurity protocols, the order said.Pig farmers and breeders have also been directed to follow strict biosecurity measures. Movement of pig feed will require prior permission from the veterinary department. The administration warned that violation of the order would invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).Charaideo was among the upper Assam districts to report ASF cases in recent weeks, after outbreaks were reported from Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in late May. Lakhimpur also reported cases in early July.Veterinary officials have urged pig farmers to remain vigilant, report suspected infections without delay, and comply with containment measures.ASF is a contagious viral disease affecting domestic and wild pigs. It does not infect humans but can cause heavy losses to pig farmers. Biosecurity and early reporting remain the key control measures.
