Malayalam filmmaker Don Palathara’s latest feature Ekadesham, titledThe Uncertainty Principle in English, will have its world premiere at Filmfest Aachen 2026 in Germany. The film, which will screen in the competition section, follows a group of young people in Kochi navigating uncertain careers, relationships and everyday life.Speaking to us, director Don Palathara, who also wrote and edited the film says, “The film is based on the idea of the ‘uncertainty principle’ in physics. I was curious about how it would work in a film with characters and a plot. It is slightly experimental and has layers to it. But it’s not extremely serious and is playful, too. The film has been chosen to be screened at two more festivals, but we cannot reveal those before the announcements are made.”Will he be attending the festival? “No, an actor will represent us there. The producer and I plan to go to other festivals in the future.”Don says the film explores the lives of people who dream of cinema and work in the industry.“I have seen so many such people, and I have worked with them — how they wait for their break. People see cinema as something huge, and how this affects their lives,” he says.Don used a small crew for the film. “I didn’t do it on the same scale as Family. Just a few of us worked on this small production. Even the production was an indie setup with a crew of six. I did some of the camera work too, with a hand-held camera. I had more freedom to work than I would have had with a big crew. People don’t pay heed when you walk around with hand-held cameras and shoot among crowds,” he recalls.The film stars Roshan Mathew, Divya Prabha, Vinay Forrt and Aarsha Baiju, among others.“The cast came on board fully aware of the nature and scale of the film and stood with me throughout,” adds Don.Ekadesham will be screened at Apollo Kino & Bar, Aachen on September 25 at 8 pm, marking the beginning of its international festival journey.
