Jaipur: As schools reopened on Monday after summer break, the school administration of a govt senior secondary school in Sri Dungargarh area of Bikaner found the roof of a classroom collapsed on tables and chairs kept in the classroom.Classroom roof collapses in Bikaner school, mishap avertedJaipur: A major mishap was averted at a govt senior secondary school in Bikaner’s Sri Dungargarh area after the roof of a locked classroom was found collapsed, Monday, the day schools reopened after the summer vacation.School authorities discovered the collapsed roof while inspecting the campus before students arrived for classes. Officials said the incident occurred during the summer break when the school remained closed. The education department had last week directed all schools to inspect classrooms for structural safety before allowing students to resume classes in view of the approaching monsoon.“During the inspection, when one room was opened, the principal found that the ceiling slabs had collapsed. This school underwent repairs last year and a Gramin Sewa Shivir was organised there only last week, when no signs of structural distress were noticed,” said Kishan Chand, district education officer, Bikaner.Officials said tables and chairs kept inside the classroom were damaged in the collapse, but no one was injured as the room was locked. The damaged portion of the school has been cordoned off and alternative arrangements are being made for students, Chand said.“A team reached the spot Monday morning to assess the structural safety of the building. Prima facie, the collapse appears to have been caused by heavy storms that lashed the region in recent days,” he added.Last week, the education department instructed schools not to use unsafe buildings and to ensure that only structurally sound classrooms are used for teaching. Schools were also directed to clean terraces, clear drains and pipelines, and prevent waterlogging on campuses ahead of the monsoon.Officials have been asked to make alternate arrangements wherever classrooms are found unsafe, to ensure that students are not exposed to any risk.
