Railways urged to operate these trains from Salem town station

SALEM: Former zonal railway users’ consultative committee member G Hariharan Babu has urged Southern Railway to operate some trains from Salem Town Railway Station instead of Salem Junction, citing the hardships faced by commuters. In a representation to the Salem railway divisional manager Panna Lal on Saturday, Babu pointed out that Salem Town station lies 8 km away Southern Railway the junction station and is surrounded by dense residential areas. “Nearly 80% of the working population lives around Salem Town and Shevapet. Passengers are forced to travel 8 km by road through traffic congestion to reach the junction station, causing loss of time, money, and fuel,” he said.He suggested that Salem–Erode–Coimbatore, Salem–Rasipuram–Namakkal–Trichy–Mayiladuthurai, Salem–Namakkal–Karur, Salem–Dharmapuri–Yeshwantpur (Bengaluru), Salem–Jolarpet–Katpadi, and Salem–Erode–Perundurai–Tirupur–Coimbatore (midday service previously run) trains originate at Salem Town, halt at Shevapet and then proceed to Salem Junction.
