The school was found operating from a buffalo shed, with students sitting on the ground in a makeshift classroom and straw stacked inside. It had allegedly been functioning there for around two-and-a-half years after its village building was declared unsafe.“After the issue was highlighted in the media and came to the attention of the state govt Saturday, the school was temporarily shifted to a house,” said a source. The data also highlighted gaps in basic amenities. Bikaner had 84, while Jhalawar and Jaisalmer had 81 and 79 respectively.Drinking-water shortages were similarly widespread. Dausa topped the list with 96 schools without the facility, followed by Udaipur (70), Alwar (65), Karauli (60) and Banswara (58).The department said alternative arrangements were being made for drinking water and temporary toilet facilities where regular infrastructure was unavailable. The state Budget has allocated Rs 550 crore for school repairs and renovation and Rs 450 crore for construction of buildings for schools that are building-less or housed in dilapidated structures. The govt has also proposed mobilising Rs 2,500 crore annually for five years for construction, repair and maintenance of school buildings.
