NEW DELHI: The names of 15-20% of Delhi’s 1.45 crore registered voters are at risk of being deleted from the electoral roll before the publication of the draft electoral roll on Aug 17.During the near-month-long door-to-door enumeration of voters, most booth level officers (BLOs) have found that 15-20% of the registered voters linked to their booths have shifted their residences and such voters were not found at the registered addresses, at least two senior officials from the office of the chief electoral officer of Delhi told TOI.Delhi has a total of 1,45,10,298 registered electors as of July and names of around 29 lakh of them (it is an estimated number and the final number will be known when the draft roll is published) may be deleted when the draft electoral roll is published.

Officials attributed the high percentage largely to Delhi’s sizeable migrant population, many of whom live in rented accommodation and keep shifting residences but fail to update their new address on the voter cards.“When BLOs visited the registered addresses to give the enumeration forms to the voters, the neighbours or the landlords informed the BLOs that the voters have shifted recently or months ago or even a year ago.”
