15-minute halt at Davanagere turns into six-hour delay for Vande Bharat
The Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express was held up at Mayakonda railway station in Davanagere for nearly five hours due to ongoing infrastructure work on the Davanagere–Tumakuru railway line.

Bengaluru: What was supposed to be a 15-minute detention for Vande Bharat Express turned into a nearly six-hour ordeal for passengers travelling towards Davanagere after scheduled railway works ran into delays Tuesday evening.KSR Bengaluru–Belagavi Vande Bharat Express was detained at Mayakonda station, triggering frustration among passengers. At least four other trains were affected, with delays stretching to nearly seven-and-a-half hours.According to South Western Railway (SWR), the disruption was linked to scheduled yard work at Tolahunse being carried out as part of Tumakuru–Davanagere new broad-gauge line project. Vande Bharat was given priority and its planned regulation between Tumakuru and Davanagere was limited to 15 minutes. But that brief halt snowballed into hours of delay: The train reached Tumakuru at 3.22pm and was scheduled to arrive at Davanagere by 5.50pm. Instead, following its detention at Mayakonda, it reached Davanagere only at 11.35pm. The train eventually reached Belagavi at 3.53am Wednesday, around 5.5 hours behind schedule. The disruption was not limited to the flagship train. 12629 Yeshwantpur–Nizamuddin Sampark Kranti Express, which reached Arsikere at 5.09pm almost on schedule, took until midnight to reach Davanagere, arriving around five hours late. 07356 Rameshwaram–Hubballi Special, scheduled to reach Davanagere at 3.53pm, arrived at 11.17pm — nearly 7.5 hours late. 17316 Vasco Express was detained at Chikkajajur and reached Hubballi more than an hour late, while 16588 Bikaner–Yeshwantpur Bi-Weekly Express was regulated for around 70 minutes.‘Shadow block’ worsened situationSWR officials said scheduled yard works were completed on time. But the bigger problem was a “shadow block”, a period during which several ancillary works are carried out simultaneously. A rail underbridge (RUB) was also planned as part of the block, but couldn’t be completed within the scheduled time.Similar line blocks are scheduled to continue along the route during the week. SWR, however, maintained Tuesday’s disruption was an isolated incident and said subsequent works had been planned more carefully.
