NEW DELHI: With wrestling missing from the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, India’s grapplers have shifted focus to the tougher continental challenge, with the country’s men’s freestyle and Greco-Roman teams leaving for overseas training camps ahead of the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya from Sept 19-Oct 4.The men’s freestyle squad has already left for Armenia, where it will train from Aug 7-Sept 3 under chief foreign coach Emzarios Shako Bentinidis. The team will then travel to Russia for a local competition from Sept 4-6 before returning home. The Greco-Roman team, meanwhile, will travel to Uzbekistan for training from Aug 9-29. Russia’s Gogi Koguashvili, the foreign head coach, will accompany the squad during the camp, a WFI source said.The women wrestlers will continue training at the Indira Gandhi (IG) stadium here for now. They are scheduled to leave for Japan 10 days before the Games to acclimatise. Japan’s Kosei Akaishi is overseeing their preparations.The selected wrestlers for the Asiad have also been accompanied by sparring partners during the overseas camps, ensuring quality training ahead of the continental event.
