'What we have today in shooting is because of what he achieved': Jaspal Rana's students remember him post his demise

HYDERABAD: The unexpected death of noted former shooter and coach Jaspal Rana on Friday left the shooting community deeply unsettled, and Hyderabad shooter Esha Singh said she was stunned when she heard the news.“It’s definitely so unexpected. It came as a very big shock. We are all grieving. He was such a strong presence. We have what we have today in shooting, the fame and the popularity is because of what he has achieved. In those days, nobody really got so many medals and he was that star who brought so much fame to the sport,” said Esha.Esha, 21, who recently won gold in the 25m pistol event with a world recordscore at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany, added that his guidance during their six-month training stint had a strong impact on her.“He was an amazing mentor. He would always tell me that I don’t need anyone training me and I am good all on my own. And I would say, ‘no, I need you’. He was somebody who would not say much, very little, but whatever he would say is very powerful,” she said remembering him.“We had a camp in Switzerland in May 2025 when I was training with him. That was my memorable moment with him. As I said, very little talks, but he would just ask me to believe in my process and myself and always would repeat the same thing to me. He would say he sees a big dream for me,” she added.
