Dhanbad: A wedding visit turned traumatic for 18-year-old Kumkum Parveen from Gonda in Uttar Pradesh after she was injured in Monday’s firing at Wasseypur.Kumkum had come to Dhanbad to attend a relative’s wedding and was out shopping with her aunt, Chanda Khatun, when gunshots broke out near Bhuli More. She was caught in the firing while the attackers were allegedly targeting Shanu Khan, brother of jailed gangster Fahim Khan.Kumkum was taken to a private hospital, where she is undergoing treatment. Her condition is stable and she is out of danger. Relatives said the injury has not dampened her wish to recover quickly and attend the wedding, though the incident has left her deeply shaken.“I had never seen anything like this before. Within seconds, people started running for cover. We dropped to the ground, but I was hit by a bullet,” Kumkum said.She later told relatives that she did not want to return to Wasseypur. For her aunt, the family celebration has been overshadowed by fear. “We came here for a happy occasion, but the firing has terrified everyone. Our only concern now is that the wedding is completed safely,” Chanda said.Kumkum was visiting Wasseypur for the first time. She said she hoped to recover in time for the wedding, but the experience had made her wary of returning to the area.Meanwhile, an uneasy calm prevailed over Wasseypur on Tuesday. Several shops remained closed, traffic was sparse and residents refrained from speaking openly about the incident.The shooting brought back memories of old gang rivalries that led to turf war in the area. “Ordinary people have nothing to do with these rivalries, but they are getting caught in the crossfire. People are now scared to step out of their homes,” said local resident Naushad Rizwi.Another resident, Ayesha Parveen, said families were once again living with a sense of insecurity. “Nobody knows when or where someone may open fire,” she said.Dhanbad SSP Prabhat Kumar said, “Police had gathered crucial evidence and intensified action against criminal networks operating in the area.”
