Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh will now review every maternal death on a daily basis and initiate corrective measures in the district where it occurs, in a move aimed at identifying gaps in care and preventing repeat deaths, additional chief secretary, medical and health, Amit Kumar Ghosh said on Friday. Until now, maternal death reviews were conducted once a week.The move comes amid concerns over the state’s maternal mortality ratio (MMR), which rose from 141 to 154 per 1,00,000 live births between the SRS 2021-23 and 2022-24 rounds. The latest figure is also substantially higher than the national MMR of 87.Ghosh also issued an official order directing the health department to organise training programmes for doctors from 28 newly established autonomous medical colleges and all district women’s hospitals.The training will focus on handling high-risk pregnancies and obstetric emergencies, with the aim of strengthening treatment at govt facilities and reducing avoidable referrals.The state is also tracking high-risk pregnancies through E-Kavach and monitoring women during pregnancy and the critical 42-day period after childbirth.Officials said the decadal look at the state’s MMR, however, shows that it has fallen from 197 per 100,000 live births in 2016 to 154 currently, which is a decline of nearly 22% over the decade. They attributed the fall to steps taken over the years.Citing an example, one of them said, “The proportion of postpartum haemorrhage cases being identified and treated at the point of care had increased substantially through the training programme. A decade ago, only 20-25% of postpartum haemorrhage cases were being identified in the state. Today, 75% are identified and treated on the spot.”ACS stressed that every maternal death remained a serious concern and efforts to bring down the MMR had to continue. The directive for daily reviews will require districts to identify the cause of each maternal death and take corrective measures, with focused action in districts where such deaths occur repeatedly.
