Jaipur: Even before releasing its first list for the urban local body elections, Congress stepped up efforts to contain the rebel factor in Jaipur by holding consultations with ticket aspirants and local leaders.The party is also exploring organisational positions and future political appointments to placate those who may be denied tickets.Congress spokesperson Swarnim Chaturvedi said the party held consultations and consensus meetings in the last two days to minimise dissent after ticket distribution. “All the processes are being carried out through consultation and consensus. We are making efforts to ensure that there is no major rebellion after the tickets are announced,” he said.

He said the party was also prepared to deal with aspirants who may decide to contest independently or move to other parties, including BJP. The first list is expected on Aug 29.The exercise assumes significance as Congress is looking to field younger and winnable candidates, which could leave some veterans, ageing sitting councillors and candidates with poor past performance out of the race. The leadership is therefore trying to ensure that those denied tickets do not turn against the official nominees.Congress leaders are also wary of BJP exploiting dissent after the Congress list is announced, particularly in closely fought wards. The party believes BJP could approach denied Congress aspirants and field them against official Congress candidates to split the vote.Elections are being held for 309 urban local bodies. Polling will take place in two phases on Sept 9 and 11, with counting on Sept 14.BJP has also begun its candidate-selection exercise, receiving around 2,500 applications for Jaipur’s municipal polls alone.
