Kottayam: Two Class XII students drowned in Achankovil River at Kodinjumoola Kadavu near Konni Airavan Puthiyakavu Temple on Saturday afternoon, police said.

The deceased were Shibin Binoy, 17, son of Thomas Mathew and Sheena of Konni Athumpumkulam, and Dennis Shibu, 17, son of Shibu Yohannan and Sherly of Konni. Both were students of PSVPM Higher Secondary School, Konni, the police said.

The incident occurred around 2.15pm. As Saturday was a holiday, the students had reportedly come to the school for volleyball training. After training, a group of three reportedly went to bathe at the nearby Kodinjumoola Kadavu. However, they got caught in the currents.Hearing the commotion, locals rescued one of the boys. One student died on the spot and the third boy was rushed to Konni Medical College Hospital, where he died later.Konni fire force and police reached the spot and coordinated rescue operations.
