Mapusa: Mandrem police on Saturday arrested two men in connection with the assault on a 32-year-old high court advocate and his 75-year-old client at Tembwada, Morjim, on Friday. Advocate Ankur Kumar and his client, Anil Naik, were allegedly attacked over a demolition order in a contempt petition filed by the latter.The arrested accused have been identified as Dhruva Morjee (30) and Dileep Morjee (55). Police said a group armed with iron rods and concrete bricks stopped the victims’ car by creating a roadblock using a car and a tempo, then smashed the windshield and windows with rods and stones.Speaking from the hospital, Kumar said eight to 10 people surrounded the vehicle, jumped onto the bonnet, broke the windows, and dragged the occupants out. He alleged the attackers tore their clothes and beat them with sticks and bricks. Kumar sustained a fractured eye socket, serious nasal injuries, and multiple deep wounds.Kumar further alleged that the assailants tried to destroy evidence by cleaning the damaged vehicle and threatened to kill him unless he reported the incident as a self-accident. He said the attackers fled with files and case-related documents and warned him to withdraw the land dispute case.Police have registered an FIR against 12 persons under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for unlawful assembly, wrongful restraint, assault with deadly weapons, and criminal intimidation. Investigators said efforts are on to identify the remaining accused.The attack has drawn condemnation from the legal fraternity. Senior advocate J E Coelho Pereira, president of the Goa High Court Bar Association, said the association would move the HC. He urged the state to enact a special law for advocates’ protection.The North Goa District Lawyers Association submitted a representation to DIG Ved Prakash Surya seeking a swift and transparent probe. At the same time, the Mapusa Advocates Forum called the incident an attack on the rule of law, stating that assaulting an advocate discharging professional duties amounts to an assault on the justice system.
