Anil Kapoor has opened up about his initial hesitation to headline ‘1942: A Love Story’. The Vidhu Vinod Chopra-directed romantic drama featured Anil Kapoor alongside Manisha Koirala and Jackie Shroff. The movie was released in 1994 and went on to become a memorable romantic film of its era.More than three decades later, Anil Kapoor has revisited his experience making the movie. The actor revealed that he was not convinced he was the ideal choice for the central character. He believed a younger actor would be better suited to the part. Anil Kapoor even suggested two names for the role. He felt Bobby Deol, who was beginning his career at the time, could be considered. He also mentioned Aamir Khan as another possible choice in an interview with Variety India. “I was not very keen to do the film. I felt this film needed a younger actor to play the role. But Vinod (Vidhu Vinod Chopra) felt I should do the film. At that time, Bobby Deol was just starting fresh, so I had suggested his name, and even Aamir Khan.”
Music convinced Anil Kapoor to stay
The actor’s perspective changed after he heard some of the songs created for ‘1942: A Love Story’. The music made a strong impression on him and eventually played an important role in his decision to accept the project. Anil Kapoor recalled that he became particularly attached to the songs. He felt he could not imagine another actor appearing on screen while performing them. “The music was a huge turning point for me to change my decision and do the film. I said if these songs are in the film, there is no way I am letting anyone else lip-sync to them. It has to be me. I want to thank Vinod for convincing me to do this film,” he says. The soundtrack subsequently became one of the most recognised elements of the movie. Songs such as ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ continue to be associated with the film.

Anil Kapoor also remembered the making of ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’. The song is presented from his character Naren’s perspective. However, Manisha Koirala’s Rajjo occupies much of the visual space. Initially, Anil Kapoor found the decision unusual. He noticed that he was barely seen in the sequence despite being the character associated with the song’s perspective. “We were shooting for ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga.’ The song is from Naren’s perspective. He is singing it, but I was not in the frame. I was getting restless. Then I got insecure and went to Vinod and Sanjay (Sanjay Leela Bhansali) and Farah (Farah Khan) and asked them, ‘If the song is being sung by Naren, then why are you guys not including me at all?’”
Manisha Koirala became the visual focus
Anil Kapoor’s doubts disappeared when he eventually watched the completed song. He understood why the filmmakers had chosen to make Manisha Koirala’s character the central visual presence. “It was later when I saw the song and Rajjo (Manisha Koirala) was in the frame while the song played in the background, that I realized it made it even more beautiful.” The actor went on to praise Manisha Koirala’s performance and appearance. He also remembered the contribution of several members of the creative team.

Anil Kapoor described Manisha Koirala as the emotional centre of ‘1942: A Love Story’. He also credited Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Binod Pradhan and Farah Khan for shaping the song’s visual presentation. “How beautiful Manisha was and she still is. She was the emotional thread of that film. The way the song was picturized by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, (DOP) Binod Pradhan and Farah Khan made it magical. There were hardly any shots of me in the song; it was all Manisha and the visuals. I was treated like the leading lady and Manisha was the hero. That’s a core memory of this film for me,” Anil Kapoor says.‘1942: A Love Story’ is set to return to theatres on August 21, 2026, in an upgraded format. The movie also featured Danny Denzongpa, Anupam Kher, Pran and Brian Glover in important roles.
