NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed India’s 7.8% GDP growth, calling the latest economic numbers a sign of “even stronger confidence” despite global headwinds.“7.8% growth. Strong numbers. Even stronger confidence,” PM Modi said in a video, describing the performance as a “demonstration of collective responsibility”.He pointed to the difficult global backdrop, saying the world was “plagued by wars” and faced disrupted supply chains, with “no stableness since Covid”. Despite these challenges, he said, “India [is] growing at a fast pace.”PM Modi hit out at those spreading “jhooth ki goonj”, saying the latest numbers had torn through the narrative of their “despair” about the Indian economy.“India’s high GDP growth has come when world is beset by crises and supply chain is disrupted. Since Covid in 2020, global stability has been elusive. Despite this, India is progressing at a fast clip. On the other hand, people mired in despair are busy spreading “jhooth ki goonj” and disappointment all around,” he said.India’s economy expanded 7.8% in the April-June quarter of 2026-27, beating the Reserve Bank of India’s 7% forecast and retaining its position as the world’s fastest-growing major economy. Growth was, however, slower than the 8.6% recorded in the previous quarter, while exceeding the 6.9% expansion in the year-ago period.PM Modi had earlier described the growth as a “herculean feat”, crediting the collective strength of Indians for the economy’s resilience.
