Kochi: Opposition in Angamaly municipality alleged that civic body has failed to take effective measures to address growing stray dog menace in various parts of the town despite earlier assurances.Opposition leader T Y Elias said the issue had become a serious concern for locals, especially after a rabid dog reportedly attacked 19 people in Angamaly recently, creating widespread fear among public. “Following the incident, municipal council had convened an emergency meeting and unanimously decided to take stringent steps to control the menace,” he said. However, opposition alleged that follow-up action was limited to catching a few dogs from municipal market on a single occasion and vaccinating them. “No sustained drive has been carried out since then,” Elias said.According to him, more than 1,000 stray dogs are roaming across different parts of municipality. He said instead of merely vaccinating stray dogs, municipality should establish dedicated shelters to safely manage them.Opposition leader said students and pedestrians are living in fear, with packs of stray dogs seen near locations including KSRTC bus stand, market area and the vicinity of Nayathode Higher Secondary School.Elias said locals had expected a regular dog-catching drive in the region following reports of dog bites, but their concerns remained unresolved even after a month. He urged municipal authorities to take immediate steps in view of the recent Supreme Court order on stray dog management and warned of strong protests if the issue is not addressed.
