NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Wednesday accused the ruling Aam Aadmi Party of allowing an open trade of drugs in Punjab and promised that the Bharatiya Janata Party will make the state drug-free in two years if it comes to power. The minister also took a dig at CM Bhagwant Mann without naming him and said that “someone who himself gets intoxicated cannot make the state drug free”.“Once people remove useless AAP govt in Punjab, we will wipe out drug menace in 2 years,” Amit Shah said at a rally in Jalandhar.“Someone who gets intoxicated and insults the gurus cannot free Punjab from the scourge of drugs. It cannot liberate Punjab … only the BJP is capable of freeing Punjab from drugs,” he said.

The home minister also promised a drug-free Punjab by December 2029, claiming to wipe out the drug menace in two years.“Today, from here, I promise the mothers and youth of Punjab that you support the BJP in this election and vote for the lotus symbol, we will free Punjab from the drug business by December 31, 2029″, Shah said.“The BJP has already demonstrated this. We launched a nationwide campaign for a drug-free India. From 2004 to 2014, the Congress was in power; in those 10 years, 26 lakh kilograms of narcotics were seized nationwide. Then came Modi ji’s government; between 2014 and 2024, PM Modi’s government seized Rs 1.2 crore kilograms of drugs. The Congress party had seized narcotics worth Rs 40,000 crore; in contrast, the BJP seized drugs worth Rs 1,90,000 crore,” Shah said.
