Lucknow: Deployed on traffic duty on Sitapur Road, traffic constable Naveen Chaudhary chased a man who had just slapped a woman and snatched her mangalsutra and moments later took a brick blow to his face from the miscreant.Undeterred by the pain of the injury, Chaudhary did not let go of the chain-snatcher.Other policemen reached to help and the snatcher, Dharmendra Kumar Maurya, 23, was overpowered. The broken chain of the woman’s mangalsutra was recovered from him. Befitting finale to this episode on Friday, the day of Raksha Bandhan, was the woman tying a rakhi on Chaudhary’s wrist and thanking him for going all out to help her like a brother.The incident took place near Chandradhala on Sitapur Road in the Madiyaon area. Accompanied by her children, Aditya and Akhilesh, the woman was waiting for a bus to travel to her village for Raksha Bandhan celebrations when a man slapped her, pulled the gold mangalsutra from her neck and fled.Her cries alerted Chaudhary, who was deployed nearby for traffic duty.Instead of waiting for the police team to arrive, the constable ran after the fleeing man and caught him, but the miscreant struck Chaudhary in the face with a brick.The chain-snatcher nabbed is a resident of Lakhimpur Kheri and works as a labourer. Another broken portion of the mangalsutra was recovered from his possession during a search at the police station.Police said FIR was registered at Madiyaon police station under sections 309(6), 115(2), 317(2) and 317(4) of the BNS and criminal record of the accused was checked with other police stations and districts.
