Madurai: In a crackdown on drug-related offences in Madurai district, police on Saturday seized 1.1kg of ganja and 161 painkiller tablets allegedly meant for illegal sale and arrested six people.Based on a tip-off, a team from the Anna Nagar police station here went to JJ Nagar and questioned four individuals over suspicion. They were found in illegal possession of ganja intended for sale. Police seized 1.1 kg of ganja and registered a case under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. They arrested Rajapandi, 19, Praveen Raj, 19, and two minors aged 17 and 16. Rajapandi and Praveen Raj were remanded in judicial custody while the minors were sent to an observation home.In a separate incident, the Sindupatti police arrested two men for illegal possession of painkiller tablets.Based on a tip-off, a team from the Sindupatti police station led by sub-inspector Annadurai visited Uchapatti village. On suspicion, they interrogated Ganeshan, 20, and Kasi, 19, of the same village. The duo gave contradictory answers. Further searches led to the seizure of 161 tapentadol tablets from the suspects.Investigations revealed that they had bought the pills from Mumbai without a doctor’s prescription and sold them at Rs 300 per tablet.Police registered a case. The arrested were remanded in judicial custody.End
