Kolkata: The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the clash at the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) made significant headway on Wednesday, claiming to have completed recording statements of students and faculty members.The team – headed by additional CP (crime) Kunal Agarwal – visited the campus for several hours and spoke to student body representatives separately. “We have been assured that students will join classes from Thursday,” said a senior police officer, who is also a part of the investigating team. Besides spending time in recording statements from various crucial witnesses of the incident, police said they had also reconstructed the incident. “We reconstructed the incident and the circumstances leading to the clash. We have taken notes of important points that were observed during the spot visit to the main entrance, the seminar hall and the library, where the incident allegedly took place. We will study the footage collected so far at night and compare the statements collected by us,” explained another officer of the SIT. The SIT is set to file its first report on Thursday.“The SIT will not only probe the incident but also create an atmosphere so that academics can resume normally. The report will provide details of the current situation,” said the officer. Police sources said after the preliminary round of witness interactions, the team is now preparing a comprehensive interim status report on the campus unrest, which will be submitted to the higher authorities on Thursday. As per senior police officers, the cross-examination focused on identifying the primary instigators, verifying the timeline of the conflict, and assessing security lapses on the campus during the incident. The SIT, comprising senior officials from the Kolkata Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was instituted following directives from the state govt to ensure a swift and impartial inquiry into the breach of law and order within the autonomous institute.Four cases have been registered at Panchasayar police station over the clash between some students and members of the Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat, a RSS-linked consumer organisation, during a programme on the institute’s campus. Several people were injured. Besides Agarwal, other members of the team include deputy commissioner of the Detective Department Sparsha Nilangi, CID deputy superintendent of police Kaushik Ghosh, assistant commissioner of police of the Anti-Rowdy Section Salil Roy, Eastern Suburban Division assistant commissioner of police Tushar Kanti Ghosh and detective department inspector Hirak Dalapati.
