SIR cuts Bengaluru voter count by 43%; city accounts for 40% of statewide deletions

Bengaluru: The city has retained 59.1 lakh voters across its 28 assembly constituencies following the publication of the final electoral roll after the special intensive revision (SIR), marking a 43% decline from the pre-SIR count of around 1.03 crore. The final roll has added just over two lakh voters to the draft electoral roll, which had 56.9 lakh voters. Of the total reduction of 1.1 crore voters across Karnataka during the revision, Bengaluru accounts for over 43 lakh, or around 40% of the statewide reduction.Of the 46.9 lakh voters removed from Bengaluru’s pre-SIR electoral roll under the ASDDO (Absent, Shifted, Duplicate, Dead and Others) categories, around 32.7 lakh were marked as permanently shifted.A section of those excluded, particularly voters who have moved but continue to be eligible to vote in the city, are expected to be enrolled again during a special drive following the revision.Greater Bengaluru Authority special commissioner (elections) Shilpa Nag and Bengaluru South ADEO KN Ramesh said booth-level officers (BLOs) deployed for the SIR would be reassigned for a month-long drive to identify voters missing from the final list and facilitate their re-enrolment.“The BLOs will compare the pre-SIR list with the final SIR list and reach out to the excluded voters to initiate the Form 6 process of including them in the voter list,” Ramesh said.He added that around 30% of voters marked as permanently shifted were expected to return to the electoral rolls. The special drive is intended to help eligible voters who were left out of the final list apply for inclusion. Such voters will have to complete the prescribed Form 6 process, with their applications subject to verification by the election authorities.
