Four years after India introduced the short-term Agnipath recruitment scheme, Kathmandu is yet to decide whether to resume the enlistment of Nepali citizens into the Indian Army.
Recruitment of Nepali nationals into the Indian Army is governed by an 80-year-old tripartite arrangement involving India, Nepal and the UK. Kathmandu suspended the policy in 2022, arguing that Agnipath’s four-year service tenure was inconsistent with the spirit of the 1947 arrangement.
