Patiala: The additional manager of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib has joined the police investigation on Wednesday in a rape and wrongful confinement case involving former Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee member Amarjit Singh Chawla.Appearing at City Sri Anandpur Sahib police post, he told investigators that several SGPC officials posted at the shrine knew about arrangements for the woman complainant’s lodging, meals and movements during her stay in the gurdwara’s sarais. He appeared after the office of Sri Anandpur Sahib DSP Jashandeep Singh Mann, served him a notice under Section 35 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. FIR No. 149 was registered at Sri Anandpur Sahib police station on Aug 21 this year under BNS Sections 64 for rape, 127(2) for wrongful confinement and 351(2) for criminal intimidation.His disclosures corroborated an earlier statement by a gurdwara driver questioned for nearly six hours by Ropar police. The driver said the complainant had stayed for nearly eight months at various sarais affiliated with Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, and management and administrative personnel knew about her presence, transit and daily arrangements.According to the complaint, the woman arrived in Anandpur Sahib on a religious pilgrimage and was wrongfully confined in shrine accommodation and sexually assaulted.Chawla resigned as an SGPC member and Shiromani Akali Dal senior vice-president after the case was registered. He has dismissed the allegations as fabricated and has since been excommunicated by Akal Takht. Police recently raided his residence in Ludhiana’s Model Town Extension and questioned relatives about his whereabouts. Records, visitor registers and statements from gurdwara employees are being scrutinised. Mann said the information gathered was being verified and further action would follow according to law.
