Ranchi Morhabadi ground LED screens being dismantled after stage razed over design flaws

Ranchi: The dismantling of LED screens at Ranchi’s Morhabadi Ground has begun, marking the latest phase in the removal of the permanent stage infrastructure that the district administration decided to demolish after finding it unsuitable for hosting large public events due to design flaws. The LED screens, installed as part of the Rs 22-crore redevelopment project during the Raghubar Das govt between 2014 and 2019, are being taken down after the permanent canopy and stage structure were dismantled in May last year. The removal work is being carried out by the district administration as part of the complete dismantling of the facility. The decision follows recommendations of a technical inspection committee, which found that the permanent structure did not meet the requirements for major state functions. Officials had pointed out that the canopy pillars obstructed spectators’ view, the stage height was inadequate for large gatherings, and its fixed dimensions prevented expansion whenever larger events were organised. As a result, temporary stages had to be erected in front of the permanent structure during major programmes, defeating the purpose of the project.Deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri earlier said the existing infrastructure would be replaced with temporary, event-specific arrangements better suited to different programmes.“The inspection committee found several functional limitations in the existing structure. It was therefore decided to dismantle it and use temporary stages as per the requirements of individual events,” he said.
