PWD to install reflectors on roads to cut night accidents

Noida: In an effort to reduce road accidents caused by poor visibility at night, Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed a reflector installation drive across several major roads in the area, under which red and yellow reflectors will be installed along road edges, dividers and important turns. The targeted roads include Wazirabad Road, GT Road and Link Road. The concerns over night-time visibility have spiked along the stretches of GT Road where roadwork, open roadside excavations and non-functional streetlights have posed difficulties for motorists after dark. An earlier report had also highlighted Arthala U-turn on GT Road as an accident-prone spot, with inadequate visibility and a lack of advance signage making it difficult for motorists to identify the turn from a safe distance. The initiative aims to help motorists identify directions, dividers and other obstacles more easily while driving at night.PWD executive engineer Ramraja said that several stretches of road remain poorly lit during the night. As a result, dividers, sharp turns and other structures are not clearly visible to approaching motorists. The reflectors are designed to shine brightly when headlights fall on them, allowing them to be visible from a considerable distance.According to the department, the first phase of the campaign is focusing on accident-prone locations and stretches where lighting is inadequate. Other major routes will also be inspected, and reflectors will be installed wherever they are considered necessary. The department is also checking other road-safety arrangements during the campaign to identify potential risks.
