Pune: The police department has made it clear that blaring music systems would not be allowed during Ganapti and dahi handi festivals, despite the demands from mandals and activists to let the festivals be celebrated without restrictions.Pune police commissioner Amitesh Kumar on Tuesday said, “There was no objection to celebrating the festivals, but loud music systems that cause noise pollution would not be permitted.”He warned that music systems, if found being played at levels exceeding the prescribed sound limits, would be immediately seized.As part of the preparations for the Ganapati festival, a meeting of representatives of various civic departments, the police administration and Ganesh mandals was held at Pune Municipal Corporation building on Monday.Various issues were discussed to ensure that the festival would be celebrated peacefully. At the meeting, representatives of Ganapati mandals demanded that the festival should be allowed to be celebrated without any restriction.Meanwhile, the city police made it crystal clear that there would be no relaxation in norms governing noise pollution. Kumar said, “There would be a complete ban on high-decibel sound equipment such as speakers, plasma, and mid-pressure systems.”He added that all stakeholders were in agreement on the issue. “It would be mandatory to follow the rules prescribed for the use of loudspeakers,” he said.Discussions will be held, within the framework of the rules, on the permissible levels of these music systems.
