Bathinda: Members of the Punjab School and College Private Bus Transport Union will keep their buses off the roads in Bathinda, Mansa and Barnala districts on Sep 3 and hold a mahapanchayat in Bathinda over their demands.Union president Gurpreet Singh Sra said operators were seeking a separate transport policy with lower taxes for school and college buses. He said they run only 50-60 km a day, compared with about 500 km by regular buses, but face the same tax structure. The union also demanded an end to alleged harassment by transport department officials, lower taxes, and an increase in the permissible lifespan of school buses from 15 to 25 years. It also opposed the additional burden of newer GPS systems. The union has asked students and parents to make alternative arrangements or skip school and college on Sep 3. It warned of intensified protests if the demands are not addressed.
