KALYAN: The political controversy over the removal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s photograph at a college in Pune by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) workers spilled over into the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) on Wednesday, with the civic standing committee meeting being adjourned for 10 minutes in protest against the incident.The move came a day after the BJP warned that it would withdraw from the Mahayuti alliance in the civic body and sit in the Opposition if the Shiv Sena (Shinde) failed to sever its alliance with the MNS.During Wednesday’s standing committee meeting, BJP members Mandar Halbe and Dipesh Mhatre demanded that the meeting be adjourned for the entire day as a mark of protest.However, standing committee chairman Mallesh Shetty opposed the demand, saying the meeting could not be adjourned for the full day.At this point, Shiv Sena (Shinde) member Vikas Mhatre suggested that the meeting be adjourned for only 10 minutes.Taking the suggestion into consideration, Shetty adjourned the meeting for 10 minutes.Immediately after the adjournment, Halbe and Mhatre told reporters outside the hall that they had received support from Shiv Sena member Vikas Mhatre and MNS member Ganesh Landge for their demand, resulting in the meeting being adjourned, albeit briefly.The episode also highlighted the apparent contradiction in the BJP’s position on the Mahayuti alliance.Despite announcing that it could withdraw from the alliance and sit in the Opposition, BJP members attended the standing committee meeting. They limited their protest to demanding an adjournment and then returned to the meeting after the 10-minute break.There was also an unexpected lighter moment when the two BJP members returned to the hall. Shiv Sena member Naveen Gawli remarked, “We thought you would not come back now.” His comment triggered laughter among members in the hall.The remark was seen in the context of the standing committee proceedings, where Halbe and Mhatre are among the members who frequently participate in discussions on various agenda items.Gawli’s comment suggested that the meeting might have proceeded more quietly had the two BJP members stayed away.The BJP’s protest comes amid growing tensions between the alliance partners in KDMC following the Pune incident.The party has demanded that the Shinde Sena end its understanding with the MNS, failing which it has threatened to withdraw from the Mahayuti arrangement in the civic body.The developments have put the local power-sharing arrangement under renewed pressure, with the BJP’s next move likely to depend on the decision of its state leadership.
