Kottayam: Leader of the Opposition Pinarayi Vijayan has alleged that Enforcement Directorate (ED) made CPM an accused in the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank case following lapses by individuals at the bank, and claimed that the agency had influenced some of those involved in the case to turn approvers.Vijayan was speaking after inaugurating the concluding function of the centenary celebrations and the centenary memorial building of the Ithithanam Janata Service Cooperative Bank in Changanassery near here on Wednesday. He said that when irregularities surfaced at Karuvannur Bank, govt and the cooperative department had taken strong action, identifying those responsible for corruption and registering cases against them. It was at that stage, he said, that ED stepped in. He alleged that the accused in ED’s case was not merely an individual, claiming that for the first time in the country’s history, a political party was being made an accused.Vijayan alleged that ED had influenced some of those involved in the case to become approvers, and that the statements obtained from them in writing reflected what ED — or those he said were directing the agency from behind — wanted. He claimed those statements were then presented as strong evidence to implicate CPM as an accused, as a result of which everyone who had served as Thrissur district secretary of CPM became an accused in the case.He alleged that the attempt was to handle the matter politically and said it would be confronted politically. He further alleged that the case was a move to destroy and tarnish the reputation of Kerala’s cooperative sector while adding that corruption should not be allowed to touch the sector either.
