Online fraudsters cheat retired IAF officer of Rs4.5 lakh

Pune: Online fraudsters posing as officials of a public sector bank allegedly cheated a retired Indian Air Force (IAF) officer of Rs4.5 lakh by asking him to fill out an online Life Certificate form.It took place between Oct 8 and 9. The complainant (84) is a resident of Kondhwa. Retired personnel of central and state govts are required to submit a Life Certificate once a year.Senior inspector Santosh Khetmalas said, “The fraudsters, posing as officials of a public sector bank, made a video call to the retired officer and claimed that they were helping retired personnel fill out their Life Certificates. The caller told him he could fill out the form from home and that the bank would do the rest of the work.”“They sent an online form to the complainant through a messaging app. The complainant downloaded the form, filled it out and submitted it through the app. The form sought his personal details, identity card information and banking details. However, the form actually contained a link to remote-access software. By filling out the form, the complainant ended up sharing his bank account details with the suspects, who subsequently siphoned off Rs4.5 lakh from his account,” Khetmalas said.“We are examining the money trail and identifying the bank accounts to which the money was transferred,” he added.
