North Goa hospital performs AI-assisted knee replacement surgery
Surgeons can now achieve accurate knee alignment and precise implant positioning

Panaji: The North Goa District Hospital on Saturday successfully performed an AI-assisted total knee replacement, introducing advanced technology into the public healthcare system and expanding access to modern surgical care. The surgery was led by Dr Vikas Solyekar, head of orthopaedics, with assistance from Dr Prabhav Desai. Dr Divya Pai provided anaesthesia support, while the operation theatre staff played a key role in ensuring the procedure went smoothly.“Driven by sustained research, continuous learning, and focused efforts by the orthopaedic team to introduce technology-enabled surgical equipment within govt healthcare, ensuring that innovation is not limited to private institutions,” said Dr Solyekar. He said adopting AI-supported systems for joint replacement would strengthen the hospital’s ability to provide high-quality care to patients from diverse backgrounds.Unlike traditional knee replacement procedures, AI-assisted technology provides real-time intraoperative guidance, helping surgeons achieve accurate knee alignment and precise implant positioning, Solyekar said.“Improved precision can contribute to better functional outcomes and may support earlier mobilisation. With timely physiotherapy and rehabilitation, patients can progress towards recovery with greater confidence under clinical supervision,” he said. The procedure marks a step towards strengthening govt healthcare through the adoption of safe, evidence-based medical advancements and improving access to technology-driven treatment.
