Thrissur: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed Thrissur Rural Police to take appropriate action on a complaint concerning the deaths of eight engineering students in a road accident on NH 66 at Kaipamangalam on Sept 4.In a communication, the commission has asked the rural SP to submit an action taken report (ATR) on the complaint within four weeks. The car in which the students, from Tamil Nadu, were travelling had rammed into a truck parked on the road which was under construction. When contacted by TOI, Thrissur rural SP Mohammad Nadeemuddin confirmed that he had received the NHRC communication and said he would submit the ATR within the stipulated period. The complaint, filed by Delhi-based social activist Krishna Rajput, raised concerns about road safety measures, the alleged parking of a truck on the highway, traffic management, barricading and lack of warning signs. It sought an impartial inquiry into the circumstances leading to the accident and the identification of any lapses on the part of the authorities concerned. The complainant also called for the preservation of CCTV footage and other relevant evidence, the fixing of responsibility wherever negligence is established, and appropriate compensation for the families of the deceased in accordance with the applicable rules. The commission has clarified that referring the complaint to the district police chief does not establish negligence or fix liability for the accident. The findings of the inquiry and the response of the police authorities are awaited, according to the commission.
