NMC MBBS seat matrix 2026-27 revised; Karnataka leads states with 1,650 new seats

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revised the MBBS seat matrix for the 2026-27 academic year, adding 13,636 seats across medical colleges in India. The revised figures take the total number of approved MBBS seats to 1,40,664 across 839 medical colleges, excluding seats in Institutes of National Importance (INIs).The revised matrix was notified by the NMC’s Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) on September 22. The updated seat figures will be used for NEET UG 2026 counselling and reflect the latest approved intake capacity for the academic session.NMC adds 13,636 MBBS seatsThe revised matrix includes 1,27,028 renewed MBBS seats and an increase of 13,636 seats across government and private medical colleges. Government medical colleges account for 64,121 seats, while private medical colleges have 76,543 seats.The matrix covers 447 government and 392 private medical colleges. It also includes 3,850 MBBS seats across 41 newly established medical colleges. Of these, 13 are government institutions with 850 seats, while 28 are private colleges with 3,000 seats.Karnataka records highest seat increaseKarnataka has recorded the highest increase in MBBS seats, with 1,650 additional seats. Tamil Nadu follows with 1,250 seats, while Uttar Pradesh has added 1,200 seats. Rajasthan and Telangana have recorded increases of 1,100 and 1,060 seats, respectively.

The revised matrix incorporates permissions granted for new medical colleges and increases in the annual intake capacity of existing institutions. The approvals were issued through the applicable regulatory and appeal processes.Colleges asked to verify revised seat detailsThe NMC has directed medical colleges to verify the details in the revised seat matrix and report any discrepancies or omissions to MARB for examination.The commission has also clarified that the current matrix may be revised further following decisions by relevant appeal committees or other competent authorities.For NEET UG 2026 candidates, the revised matrix represents the latest approved seat figures for the 2026-27 admission cycle. Candidates taking part in counselling should refer to the latest NMC-approved matrix while checking college-wise and state-wise MBBS seats.
