Vijayawada: The ruling NDA is likely to win several municipalities and wards in Andhra Pradesh unopposed after opposition YSRCP candidates allegedly faced obstructions while attempting to file nominations before the deadline closed on Sunday. The nomination process was marred by clashes, police lathicharges, stone pelting and allegations of intimidation in several towns.YSRCP candidates failed to reach the offices of returning officers in Darsi in Prakasam district, Rayachoti, Punganur in Annamayya district, and Gurazala and Piduguralla in Palnadu district. Darsi witnessed high tension throughout the day. YSRCP chairperson candidate Vennapusa Venkata Reddy accompanied by candidates for ward councillors and party workers arrived to file his nomination around 2 pm on Sunday. The rally, which started from the party office on Podili Road, was stopped near Clock Tower by police, who said only the candidate and authorised proposers would be allowed to proceed to the nomination centre. The restriction triggered heated arguments after the candidates were denied entry. As workers raised slogans and refused to disperse, police resorted to a lathicharge. Tension continued in the town, disrupting movement in the area. With TDP cadres reaching the centre in huge numbers, the situation turned volatile. Venkata Reddy, Ramana Reddy and all 25 candidates nominated by the party for ward positions failed to complete the filing process before the deadline. Darsi assembly constituency is represented by Buchepalli Sivaprasada Reddy. In Gurazala and Piduguralla, YSRCP candidates could not file nominations for chairperson and councillor posts, as feared by former MLA and party constituency in charge Kasu Mahesh Reddy. Similar allegations of obstruction were reported from Punganur and Rayachoti.Meanwhile, YSRCP state general secretary and MLC Lella Appi Reddy submitted representations to State Election Commission, seeking intervention over alleged violence, intimidation and administrative hurdles during nominations. The party alleged that candidates faced attacks, nomination papers were snatched or torn, and police failed to ensure a conducive atmosphere for filing papers. The party also flagged 915 pending caste and income certificate applications in Chandragiri constituency, claiming that delays could deprive eligible candidates of an opportunity to contest. It sought immediate issuance of certificates and action against officials found guilty of deliberate delay. The party alleged that the nomination papers of Kiranmayi, a candidate for Ward 11 in Mydukur, were snatched and torn up, while the nomination papers of Sanapureddy Supraja, contesting from Ward 32 in Badvel, were forcibly taken away. It objected to officials in YSR Kadapa district creating hurdles to the acceptance of nominations by insisting on a police no-objection certificate (NOC), which is not required under the election rules. The party also complained that nomination papers were snatched and torn up in Tirupati, Dharmavaram, Kadapa and other places. It alleged that incidents of attacks, intimidation and the snatching and destruction of nomination papers had occurred in Punganur, Pulivendula, Tirupati, Badvel, Mydukur, Dharmavaram and Kadapa, leaving candidates fearful and anxious at nomination centres. YSRCP demanded that elections in areas affected by violence and obstruction be postponed and the schedule restarted from the nomination stage under Rule 7 of the municipal election rules. It also sought another opportunity for eligible candidates to file nominations, deployment of central armed police forces, CCTV surveillance and an inquiry into the alleged role of officials.
