MCD, World Bank Discuss Global Waste Models; Mayor Reviews Bhalswa Landfill Ops

New Delhi: Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) Saturday reviewed its waste management strategy with World Bank experts while mayor Pravesh Wahi inspected the Bhalswa landfill and directed officials to accelerate bio-mining operations.MCD commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar chaired a meeting with World Bank experts, where waste management models followed in Tokyo, New York and Barcelona were discussed. The World Bank team presented Tokyo’s technology-driven model, New York’s private-sector-led waste transportation and processing system, and Barcelona’s decentralised approach focused on waste segregation and behavioural change.The experts also discussed strategic options for Delhi aimed at improving MCD’s operational efficiency, financial sustainability and reducing emissions associated with waste management. MCD officials presented the corporation’s existing waste collection and transportation system and its ongoing and upcoming waste processing facilities.Separately, Wahi inspected the Bhalswa landfill and directed officials to deploy additional machinery to speed up bio-mining and complete the removal of legacy waste within the stipulated timeframe.According to the mayor’s office, around 15,000 metric tonnes of waste are being processed daily at Bhalswa, with four to five lakh tonnes of legacy waste remaining. Wahi also directed officials to accelerate the disposal of fresh waste after Sept.Work on a waste-to-energy plant at Bhalswa is also underway, the mayor’s office said. Inert material recovered during waste processing is being used to fill low-lying areas.Khirwar said Delhi needs a time-bound and sustainable waste management strategy covering collection, transportation, processing, scientific disposal and maximum recovery of resources from waste, while emphasising that global practices would have to be adapted to Delhi’s local conditions.
