Manchester United have already had to make a small adjustment to their 2026-27 kit after inadvertently falling foul of a Premier League regulation in their opening game of the season.United began the campaign without a sleeve sponsor following the expiry of their agreement with DXC Technology, which had been worth around £20 million per year since 2022. But without a sponsor occupying the left sleeve, the club was required to display the Premier League badge there as well as on the right.That did not happen during Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull City.
What did Manchester United get wrong?
United’s shirts at the MKM Stadium carried the Premier League badge on the right sleeve, while the left sleeve was left blank.The Premier League’s 2026-27 handbook contains 29 rules under its section on ‘Players’ Identification and Strip’, covering everything from shirt numbers and sponsorship to captain’s armbands and potential kit clashes.The relevant provision is Rule M.15, which states:“The logo of the League … shall appear on the right sleeve of both home strip and alternative strip shirts.“Where the relevant strip does not bear a sponsor’s logo on the left sleeve of its shirt, a logo of the league shall appear on that sleeve as well.”Because United no longer have a sleeve sponsor, the second part of the rule applies to them.While neither the Premier League nor Manchester United commented on the issue, Daily Mail Sport understands that the club has been given a polite reminder of the requirement.The mistake will be corrected for United’s first home game of the season against Ipswich Town at Old Trafford on Sunday, with the Premier League badge expected to appear on both sleeves.
Why is United’s left sleeve blank?
United have had a sleeve sponsor for the past eight seasons, but their agreement with DXC Technology officially ended at the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.The company had briefly appeared on the club’s 2026-27 home shirt during the final two fixtures of last season, but that was the final outing of the partnership.When United subsequently released their new kit and promotional imagery for the 2026-27 season, the left sleeve was completely blank.The club is still searching for a new sleeve sponsor.United do retain their main shirt sponsorship with Snapdragon, in a deal worth more than £60 million per year, while Betway has a £20 million-per-season agreement covering the training kit.Until a new sleeve sponsor arrives, however, the Premier League badge has to fill that space.
A rough opening day for United
The kit error was a minor issue compared with what happened on the pitch.United suffered a 2-0 defeat away to newly promoted Hull, conceding both goals from set pieces and leaving manager Michael Carrick with plenty to address before another meeting with a promoted side.Captain Bruno Fernandes was particularly critical of United’s performance after the final whistle.“Every away game we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches.“We needed to press more, be more aggressive, and then again we need to work on set plays and not concede these types of goals. Against these types of teams, they are waiting for that moment.”Carrick acknowledged that his side had shown some positive moments but said the early setback had made the match considerably harder.“Yeah, some [of the game] was okay, obviously bits to improve on. It was never going to be perfect today but I think going behind and giving ourselves a lot to do makes it more difficult, probably a typical one of those games of a newly promoted team at home.“You can’t give them much, they’ve got a lot to hold on to, and then after that, we had moments, we had opportunities, we just didn’t have that spark to then put the chances away or create any more.“Listen, we’re bitterly disappointed with the result today but it won’t knock us.”The United manager added:“Inside, we are hurting. The boys know we need to get better.“We’ve lost one game and it’s a bad one to lose. But it won’t change anything.”United will return to Old Trafford against Ipswich on Sunday, when their kit should have both Premier League badges in place.
