Mohali: The Operations Cell of Mohali Police has arrested a man suspected of involvement in an extortion network. He allegedly conducted reconnaissance of targets and shared their identities, addresses and locations with handlers before extortion attempts and shootings.The accused has been identified as Bhupinder Singh. Police said he allegedly received instructions through text messages about people being targeted for extortion. The messages purportedly contained details of the targets, including their identities, addresses and locations. In some cases, he was allegedly told that firing was required to intimidate the target.According to police, Bhupinder would locate the target and share the information with handlers or help their accomplices reach the spot. He allegedly received payments in return for providing information about the targets.SP (Investigation) Saurav Jindal said, “The accused allegedly used to identify and share the locations of persons targeted for extortion with gang members. We are questioning him to establish his role in other extortion and shooting cases and identify the persons with whom he was in contact.”Investigators are examining Bhupinder’s mobile phone, call records, messages and contact list to ascertain the extent of his communications with gangsters and other suspects. Police are also trying to establish whether the information allegedly provided by him was subsequently used in specific extortion attempts or firing incidents in Mohali.Officials said his custodial interrogation would be used to establish the network through which targets were identified and information was transmitted. Police are also examining his financial transactions to verify the alleged payments he received for providing target-related information.
