Ludhiana: A Canadian expatriate was allegedly lured back to India and assaulted alongside his wife by his own parents and uncles in the name of defending family honour after he converted to a different religion. The assault highlights deep-seated sectarian tensions within families, with the man forced into hiding just days after returning to Punjab under the pretense of a family reconciliation.Shivangu Dua, 29, moved to Canada seven years ago and converted to another faith in 2024, a decision that drew intense condemnation from his family. Police reports suggest that Dua’s father implored the couple repeatedly to return to Ludhiana to establish a joint business venture.Believing the family rift had healed, the couple arrived in Punjab on May 22 and moved into a rented property. Just four days later, Dua’s parents and uncles allegedly barged into the home, launched a coordinated physical assault on the couple, and issued them death threats.Responding cops initially dismissed the violence as a domestic issue, forcing the victim to work unpaid at the family grocery store for two weeks in an attempt to pacify his parents. However, when Dua requested money to cover his house rent, he was cast out of the business, prompting him to pursue formal criminal charges. The investigating officer, assistant sub-inspector Dilbagh Singh, confirmed that an FIR had been registered against Dua’s father, mother, and three uncles. The suspects face multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including armed rioting, unlawful assembly, wrongful restraint, and criminal intimidation.
