Kochi: District administration will soon submit a land acquisition proposal to Kerala Solid Waste Management Programme (KSWMP) for setting up an integrated waste management plant at Ayyankuzhi. Locals had been demanding the takeover of their holdings as the area was unfit for residential purposes due to heavy pollution.District collector G Priyanka informed about this plan during a meeting with residents of Ayyankuzhi on Tuesday.The land in Ayyankuzhi is sandwiched between two central public sector enterprises –– BPCL Kochi Refinery and Hindustan Organic Chemicals Ltd (HOCL). District collector instructed that necessary assistance be ensured for the affected people until a final decision on land acquisition is reached.Collector requested HOCL to provide educational financial support to children of the affected families and BPCL to distribute food kits.On July 8, 2025, more than 40 families were relocated from Ayyankuzhi area following the spread of smoke caused by an underground cable explosion and fire at BPCL refinery.
