Kolkata: A day after summoning Trinamool national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Kolkata Police on Sunday served notice on Rajya Sabha member Derek O’Brien to appear for questioning at Shakespeare Sarani police station at noon on Monday.Police officers visited O’Brien’s Prince Anwar Shah Road residence on Sunday morning after a Saturday evening attempt to deliver the notice failed — security personnel had informed officers the MP was not at home.Officers returned after 9am on Sunday and formally served the notice on a designated representative.Banerjee was served his notice late Saturday night at his Kalighat residence; a staff member accepted it on his behalf. He has been directed to appear at Shakespeare Sarani at noon on Tuesday, Sept 1.Former MLA Humayun Kabir and advocate and former councillor Baiswanar Chattopadhyay, also named in the FIRs, may receive notices shortly, police indicated.The summonses follow the confrontation on Aug 27 at 9 Camac Street, where Banerjee’s office is located. KMC officials and Kolkata Police arrived to dismantle a billboard bearing TMC signage on the building’s top floor, citing the absence of statutory clearances and a structural safety risk.They were met with fierce resistance from party seniors, private security and supporters who attempted to block officials from entering the building and accessing the roof.Police allege that the mob assaulted public servants, snatched a constable’s wireless radio and used criminal force to obstruct officials. Three FIRs have been lodged and 14 Trinamool workers arrested so far.
