The political tension hiding in plain sight
Here’s where it gets interesting. Rama Duwaji is the First Lady of a socialist mayor, Zohran Mamdani, who ran on freezing rent, universal childcare, and making New York actually liveable for working people. Her fashion has consistently reflected that politics, rented vintage Balenciaga at the private swearing-in, a custom Palestinian-Lebanese designer coat at the public inauguration, sustainable pieces chosen for their provenance and meaning at every turn.And then at the championship parade, the most public, most working-class, most New York event of the year, she showed up in a dress made of the same graphic tees you can buy off a Canal Street vendor for $20. What the criticism misses entirely is that Rama Duwaji is not trying to look like a First Lady. That is the whole point. She met her husband on Hinge, they married at City Hall, and her everyday wardrobe looks like any other young artist you’d pass on the street in Brooklyn with cowboy boots, boxy shorts, big silver hoops, and layered charm necklaces.
