Kolkata: Following instructions from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) will prepare a model standard operating procedure (SOP) incorporating suggestions and recommendations of the expert committee for year-round maintenance and cleanliness of Rabindra Sarobar water bodies and chalk out remedial measures to check erosion of the banks of islands and prevent excessive growth of aquatic weeds.KMDA officials said they would prepare the SOP as per directives of the green tribunal for year-long cleaning and maintenance of the Lake water bodies.KMDA has been directed to take requisite measures to prevent excessive growth of aquatic weeds and hyacinth, specially in the public pool and Padmapukur water body.It has also been directed to reduce erosion of the banks of islands by planting specific types of plants and saplings bordering the islands.The authorities have been directed to carry out manual de-siltation of the water body along the periphery exposed during the dry season due to receding water level and have also been asked to implement a strict regime for manual cleaning of the floating materials on the water body throughout the year.The green tribunal also recently directed KMDA to conduct mechanical dredging in selected water bodies of Sarobar to get rid of the heavy sedimentation which has occurred at some identified portions of the lake bed.“Dredging of the Lake water body and proper year-round maintenance is an essential job for the existence of Sarobar. It is an artificial lake formed about 100 years ago and due to passage of time, silt, sediments and non biodegradable materials have accumulated on the bed of the water body causing serious deterioration of the condition of lake water,” said Om Prakash Jhunjhunwala of Concern for Calcutta.
