Lucknow: Doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) operated on an 8-year-old girl who had two colons, a rare condition seen in about one in 50,000 cases, according to Prof Anand Pandey.The girl from Ambedkar Nagar had passed stool from an opening below the vaginal opening since birth while also passing stool from the normal opening. Her parents sought treatment at several places before she was referred to KGMU.Prof Pandey of KGMU’s paediatric surgery department diagnosed colonic duplication. A CT scan showed an additional colon running alongside the normal colon and opening separately below the vaginal opening, he said.Prof Jiledar Rawat, head of the department, said the family received financial support through the CM and PM funds for the surgery. Prof Pandey, Dr Rahul Rai, Dr Kriti and Dr Sobha performed the surgery under Prof Rawat’s supervision.The doctors separated the duplicated colon from the normal colon and joined both to create a common channel. The surgery took three hours, Prof Pandey said.The girl has stopped passing stool through the extra opening, according to the doctors.Prof Rawat said the department treats paediatric surgical cases and uses govt schemes to support patients who cannot afford treatment. Prof Satish Verma led the anaesthesia team. KGMU vice-chancellor Prof Soniya Nityanand congratulated the team.
